When Joey Aguilar committed to Tennessee, there was some question about when he would arrive in Knoxville. UCLA is on a quarters academic system and their quarter doesn’t end till mid-June. However, Aguilar while a student at UCLA this spring, remained enrolled at Appalachian State with on-line classes and graduated this week from the school he played for the last two seasons. He will now be allowed to arrive in Knoxville on Monday, and will get a much needed jump-start on learning the Vols offense this summer.
Barnes Adds Veteran Staff Member
Rick Barnes is adding more experience to his bench with the hire of 33-year veteran coach Steve McClain. Joe Tipton’s report can be found here.
McClain has actually been in the SEC since 2020 where he was at Georgia with Tom Crean prior to joining the Texas staff in 2022.
He has also been a head coach at Hutchinson Community College, Wyoming and Illinois-Chicago in his coaching career that dates back to 1982. McClain was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2002 during his time at Wyoming.
Day 2 of Titans Rookie Minicamp
Saturday was day 2 of the Titans Rookie Minicamp as day 1 on Friday was closed to the media. Jim Wyatt noted some of his observations on TennesseeTitans.com.
Quarterback Cam Ward displayed the poise and command expected of a franchise QB. During routes-on-air drills, Ward’s quick release and accuracy stood out, particularly on a well-placed slant to undrafted free agent Xavier Restrepo. His leadership was evident when he called back Stanford’s Elic Ayomanor to rerun a route after an imprecise rep, emphasizing accountability. Ward also showed versatility, rolling out and connecting with tight end Gunnar Helm on a corner route.
Safety Kevin Winston Jr. and running back Kalel Mullings were limited due to ongoing recoveries. Winston, sidelined by ACL surgery, and Mullings, recovering from core surgery, participated in installs without helmets but did not take part in drills.
Restrepo impressed with his work ethic, leading receiver drills and fielding punts alongside Virgil Lemons and Chimere Dike. Tight end Gunnar Helm showed confidence, hauling in passes with ease. The Titans’ nine draft picks and 16 undrafted rookies will join veterans for offseason workouts starting Monday.
